National Feed Engineering Technology Research Center (NFERC) is the sole state-level engineering technology research center in China’s feed industry. It was founded in June 2000 with approval by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Attached to both CAU (China Agricultural University) and CAAS (China Academy of Agricultural Sciences), NFERC will establish a unique technology transfer and engineering support platform for the Chinese feed industry, according to central governmental policy. The research work of the NFERC has covered many high-tech fields such as biotechnology, microbial fermentation, fine chemistry and Chinese herb extract. The departments of R&D and marketing have been established independent of assistant organizations with integrated, creative, competitive personnel, in which the R&D staff has reached to 45 percent. After its foundation, NFERC has taken serving the feed industry as its responsibility and achieved fruitful accomplishments in high-tech incubation and transformation, including introduction of two kinds of international advanced technology, creation of four kinds of techniques, ten products from integration of domestic advanced technologies, six large-scale and high-level bases. The direct economic benefit amounted to 153 million RMB and indirect economic benefit rocked to 2.3 billion RMB from application of NFERC technologies. In the area of opening service, many efforts including establishing industry standards and organizing high level symposia with foresight have been undertaken, which successfully improved the development of the feed and animal production industries.
